What is Fiverr?

The term freelance first came into English in the early 1800s. The freelance economy took on a life of its own with the rise of on-demand companies.  These services allow people to work when and where they want and earn an income without ever becoming an employee of the company they work for.  Businesses now have unparalleled access to independent, highly-skilled candidates from around the world.  Freelancing represents the Future of Work and its popularity to both individuals and organizations as a preferred mode of work is growing at an exponential rate. Freelance income varies depending on the skills offered, your experience, and the market you're targeting. It is perceived by a large section of people that self-employment is a much better way of earning one's livelihood than being employed at an institution. Furthermore, flexible working hours and unplanned leaves are all privileges availed only by a self-employed individual.

The concept of creating an income from short-term tasks has been around for a long time.  The term “gig economy” was popularized around the height of the 2008-2009 financial crisis, task-based labour has evolved and has become a significant factor in the overall economy. The gig economy is based on flexible, temporary, or freelance jobs, often involving connecting with clients or customers through an online platform. The gig economy can benefit workers, businesses, and consumers by making work more adaptable to the needs of the moment and demand for flexible lifestyles.  The gig economy gets its name from each piece of work being akin to an individual 'gig'. Gig economy workers can also work for more traditional companies, which have changed how their staffing system operates. There's no denying the growth of the gig economy. It is by no means a new concept, but this past decade has seen it expand greatly.

Fiverr is an Israeli online marketplace for freelance services. Founded in 2010 and based in Tel Aviv, Israel, the company provides a platform for freelancers to offer services to customers worldwide. Fiverr was founded by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger, and was launched in February 2010. The founders came up with the concept of a marketplace that would provide a two sided platform for people to buy and sell a variety of digital services typically offered by freelance contractors.  Services offered on the site include writing, translation, graphic design, video editing and programming.  Fiverr.com has been ranked among the top 100 most popular sites in the United States and top 200 in the world since the beginning of 2013. Fiverr serves to allow listing and applying for small one-off jobs, or gigs, online.  It enables you to browse the selection of freelancers offering services, and to place orders in just one click.

Fiverr is a platform where you can set up a virtual store. Create detailed pages that explain what you’re offering and how you can help customers. You can also offer different service packages. While you’re setting up your Gig, you can create packages of your service — Basic, Standard and Premium packages — charging different prices for each. For each package, you can add Gig extras and charge additional fees. A common extra is expedited delivery, where a buyer pays more money on top of the normal Gig fee to have the seller deliver the service more quickly. The benefits of using fiverr include:

  • Lots of possibilities for Gigs:You’d be surprised at the types of Gigs you’ll find on Fiverr. If you think other people might benefit from one of your skills (and you can fulfil your Gig online), then you’ll probably find an appropriate category on Fiverr.
  • Offer services you’re passionate about:Fiverr is a great place for out-of-the-box thinking. If you’re highly interested in a topic and can offer a service for it, you can do it on Fiverr.
  • Great potential earnings:You’re not limited to charging $5. Mix and match packages with various add-ons, and you could create a side business for yourself.
  • Get paid online:You can withdraw your earnings conveniently without having to wait for a check in the mail.
  • Work as much or as little as you want:You can always pause your Gig if you’d like a break.

But while freelance websites like fiverr  may have raised wages and broadened the number of potential employers for some people, they’ve forced every new worker who signs up into entering a global marketplace with endless competition, low wages, and little stability. Decades ago, the only companies that outsourced work overseas were multinational corporations with the resources to set up manufacturing shops elsewhere. Now, independent businesses and individuals are using the power of the internet to find the cheapest services in the world too, and it’s not just manufacturing workers who are seeing the downsides to globalization. All over the country, people like graphic designers and voice-over artists and writers and marketers have to keep lowering their rates to compete. The internet makes all workers equal; there’s no way for a buyer to know who really is sitting behind the computer doing the work. This is a boon for many. People without legal immigration status in the countries where they lived were still able to earn a living online, and older workers who had lost their jobs, but had disguised their age and were finding work. It also means similarly talented people can charge equal rates, regardless of their actual qualifications, even if they live in countries that have vastly different costs of living—and that Americans and other skilled workers in the developed world have a particularly hard time competing.

Many people are also having a positive experience in the online digital economy. Workers can form digital picket lines to disrupt employers who don’t pay fairly or treat workers well, or they could gather on Reddit or Facebook to share information about better-paid gigs. Some workers in other gig industries have established platform co-ops that allow them to better control rates and working conditions. These changes might not have much of an impact on U.S. and Canadian workers who are competing with people overseas. But paying workers in the developing world better will have a positive effect on everyone else. For the many talented people who now have a global platform to sell their services, fiverr and other sites represent a huge opportunity. A recent paper has predicted that a “Matthew effect” could begin to dominate the global gig economy, in which the most successful workers do better and better. Everyone else, though, is going to do worse.
