What is Upwork?

Who is Freelancer:

A freelancer is a self-employed person who offers services, often working on several jobs for multiple clients at one time. Freelancers usually earn money on a per-job basis, charging hourly or daily rates for their work. Freelance work is usually short-term.

While a freelancer is not officially employed by another company, they can be subcontracted by other businesses. It’s common for freelancers to work on several different jobs or projects at once, but some freelance contracts may restrict who else the freelancer can work for until they complete the project.

Some of the most common freelance jobs are within creative industries such as graphic design, copywriting, website development, or photography; however, freelancers can work in almost any service-based industry, such as translation, consulting, or catering.

There are different websites being used by the freelancers around the world. The most prominent of those are Fiverr and Upwork.

What is Upwork?

Upwork is a global market place where freelancers and employers work together remotely. American based Company initially started its operation in the year 2003 with the name of oDesk but after the merger with elance in 2015, it is rebranded as Upwork worldwide.

If you’re a new freelancer, chances are you have no idea where to get your first client or even how to go about it. This is where Upwork comes in. So exactly what is Upwork? Upwork is a freelancing platform – one of the biggest around. Freelancers sign up and create a profile that highlights the skills you have to offer. Clients (business owners, startup people, entrepreneurs etc) post jobs on Upwork when they need help getting a job done.

Getting a hang of how the site works can be a bit fuzzy at the beginning but it gets easier as you keep using it. As with most freelancing sites, the work of finding yourself some clients is all on you. Clients will normally post jobs that they want done. You then bid on the jobs you want to work on by sending a proposal to the client.

This, in a gist, is how it works.

There are hundreds of jobs to choose from on Upwork. Upwork lists jobs in different categories including Web, Mobile & Software Dev, Design & Creative, Admin Support, IT & Networking, Writing, Customer Service, Sales & Marketing, Translation and many more.

As of March 2017, it reported 14 million users in 180 countries with $1 billion in annual freelancer billings. From its foundation in 1999, the company has raised a total of $168 million through 10 private equity funding rounds.
